Why it's important

Image you didn’t have access to the big-box stores that supply you with most of your food.  Image that some weather disaster, crop disease or supply route breakdown occurred and there was no food available for a few days or a few weeks.  What would you do?

Being able to grow, preserve and cook your own food is empowering and contributes directly to the health of your family and the environment.  People who grow, cook and preserve food tend to eat less processed food and more healthy local food.  This is great for their bodies, the environment, and better for local economies!

Unfortunately our climate is not conducive to year round dining from our backyard gardens or local farms. This seasonality of Manitoba food crops makes food skills and storage facilities a necessity.

Reclaiming your ability to feed yourself and your loved ones also makes a strong statement about your values.  This shows how important living in harmony with nature, the seasons and your community is to you.   These things take time, effort, and knowledge that many of us simply don’t have any more, which is why we have come to rely on others for most of what we eat.  The good news is they are easy to learn and fun to share with others!
