The Harvest Moon Society

HMS is a rural Non Governmental Organization (NGO) located in Clearwater, Manitoba, whose mission is to build linkages between urban and rural people and communities. It was founded in the spirit of cooperation, community, and a vision of enhancing healthy lands and healthy communities, with the explicit goal of enhancing vibrant rural communities and increasing the viability of producers.  HMS is dedicated to promoting the importance of rural communities, rural environments, and sustainable agriculture through an ongoing program of education, research, and outreach activities. It is the culmination of over ten years of developing relationships, research and rural revitalization projects in and around Clearwater.

HMS owns and operates the Harvest Moon Learning Centre and hosts a wide variety of educational programs, including university credit courses, agro-environmental curriculum development, agriculture awareness events, & community oriented workshops. They are the organizers of the Harvest Moon Festival and, most recently, have inspired the Harvest Moon Local Food Initiative.  They recognize that their goals are only possible if all three pillars of sustainability are carefully tended to – economic, social and environmental. Their motto, ‘Healthy Land, Healthy Communities’, captures this balance and is becoming well known throughout the province and country, as a result of their success.
