Food Skills & Growing Your Own

When was the last time you cooked a meal and sat down to eat with family or friends? Cooking, shopping, and nutritional knowledge are all important food skills.

Being able to safely grow, preserve and cook your own food are food skills that can be empowering and fun, connecting us to our family and the environment.  Growing a small part of your own diet is a great way to appreciate farmers and the work involved in food production. Plus people who grow their own food tend to eat more servings of fruits and vegetables. This is great for their bodies and the environment!

Unfortunately our climate is not conducive to year round dining from our backyard gardens and the labour intensive nature of small scale food production means a lot of us look to growing our own as a small part of a local diet. Growing your own takes time, effort, food safety skills, and knowledge that many of us simply don’t have any more, which is why we have come to rely on others for most of what we eat.  The good news is that growing and preserving  some of your food is easy to learn to do and fun to share with others!
