FMM Northern Healthy Foods Initiative

Through the Northern Healthy Foods Initiative, Food Matters Manitoba works with 13 northern and remote Manitoba communities to develop and build on community food plans.

FMM helped develop local food projects in the communities, in order to increase their access to healthy and nutritious foods.

This past year most of the communities started gardens in which to grow their own fruit and vegetables. Through this initiative, communites and schools were provided with materials and equipment such as seeds and gardening tools, technical support and training.

Throughout the gardening season, visits to the communities were made delievering workshops on seeds starting, basic gardening, composting, home canning and healthy cooking.

Along with individual garden visits and demonstrations on planting and tilling, this community support is an essential element of the gardening success.

Community Project Highlights:

We would like to share a few highlights from our community garden projects over the last year. We had many gardening successes to celebrate. Over 50 new gardens were started and over 20,000 pounds of vegetables were harvested. For many this was their first time having a garden and they were pleased with the harvest. Many of the participants would like to make their gardens bigger next year and plan to try other vegetables.
