Go4 Health EXpo at The Red River Ex

“The Buffalo Soldiers”, a first place team in the 2011 Localvore Iron Chef Cook-Off will be kicking off the Go4health EXpo on Friday, June 17th at The Red River Ex! The award winning students will be preparing their Buffalo Chili served in a Bothwell Jalapeno Chesse Bread Bowl at 3:30 PM in Exhibition Place on the Nutrition Stage to start off a healthy cooking series at the Go4health EXpo. Samples of the chili will be provided!

Since becoming champions at the Food Matters Manitoba cook off in February, the Grade 11 students have used their dish to promote local farmers in the Stonewall area and raise awareness about the impact of buying local ingredients in their community. They served up over 500 portions of their chilli at their school’s musical dinner theatre in March, and then kept the local energy up by holding a fundraising dinner for a student in their school who required a kidney transplant.

“We’re just hoping to raise awareness about what’s available in the area,” said Whitney Pull, Stonewall Collegiate Institute student. “We’re going to the school board to present what we’ve learned, what we think of local foods, and how it supports our community.”

The GO4healthEXpo will have many events, activities and special promotions taking place over the ten days, ranging from cooking and physical activity demonstrations on a centre stage, interactive displays, along with a children's play zone, and giveaways including bicycle helmets and pedometers each day. There will be a display area and a cooking demo each day. The Go4health EXpo is a joint effort between the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority and The Red River Ex. Food Matters Manitoba is proud to be one of over 70 community partner organizations at the event.

The gates open at 12:00 PM on Friday.
