Community Food Centres and Toronto's The Stop
Thursday, March 3rd
12:00 – 1:30 pm
Food Matters Manitoba
Unit 4 - 640 Broadway
From its origins as one of Canada's first food banks, The Stop Community Food Centre in Toronto has blossomed into a thriving community food centre where neighbours participate in a broad range of programs that provide healthy food, as well as foster social connections, build food skills and promote engagement in civic issues. Among the busy initiatives are community kitchens and gardens, cooking classes, drop-in meals, peri-natal support, a food bank, outdoor bake ovens, food markets and community advocacy. The Stop and other community food hubs create lasting community infrastructure to support ongoing food programming and support the livelihoods of small-scale, sustainable farmers. And they pave the way for healthier, vibrant, and just communities nationwide.
This presentation includes a’ virtual tour of ‘ The Stop with Charles Levkoe who has both worked there and co-authored a Metcalf Food Solutions paper about it.
Everyone is welcome to attend, but we do ask that you RSVP to info@foodmattersmanitoba.ca, so that we can plan for numbers.
