Food Matters Manitoba is honoured to be among the Tides Top 10 for 2013. The national award was presented by Tides Canada on April 10, to 10 outstanding organizations that are creating positive changes in their communities. Food Matters Manitoba joins a list of other reputable organizations to have won the Tides Top 10, such as The Stop and Oxfam Canada.
The Tides Top 10 is a national annual award honouring some of Canada’s most innovative social change efforts that inspire people to take action, think in new ways, and make the world a better place.
“Our Tides Top 10 award is an opportunity to shine the spotlight on some of Canada’s most innovative social and environmental initiatives,” said Ross McMillan, President and CEO of Tides Canada. “Each of this year’s recipients has demonstrated innovation, creativity and impact while working at the intersection of social, ecological and economic considerations. We’re pleased to recognize and celebrate their collective dedication to social change.”
Food Matters Manitoba was chosen as a Tides Top 10 award winner for the work with northerners, newcomers, farmers and families on over 35 projects, in more than 50 communities in Manitoba. The projects are as diverse as the communities, from youth cooking classes in Winnipeg’s North End to partnering with northerners to build greenhouses from recycled trampoline frames.
“Being recognized as one of the top ten ‘changemakers’ in Canada is truly an honor for Food Matters Manitoba.” said Executive Director, Kreesta Doucette at an awards party April 11. “This award is a recognition of the efforts of all of the Manitoba food security community to build a healthy, long-term local food system where no one is hungry and everyone has access to nutritious food.”

Food Matters has also gained recognition closer to home. Last month we were honoured to be the recipient of the Excellence in Sustainability – Outstanding Achievement Award, presented by the Government of Manitoba.
